Distressing The level of distressing specified for each table is based on the final “look” desired. Each table is unique and the patterns are different for each table. Standard medium distressing varies from some distressing to more distressing. Smooth distressing will have minimum distressing but will not be completely free of marks. Rustic distressing is much heavier distressing and can include a lot of saw marks, nail holes, knots, etc. For old wood tables, this is far from an exact science as the builder uses the boards available and we can only specify along these broad guidelines.
Finishing & Table Care We offer environmentally-safe water-based finishes on our Reclaimed Barn Wood Furniture. As water-based finishes, the stains, paints and clear coats are all low or no VOC finishes, with non-toxic components. Our clear top coats are all specially formulated for use as a protective coating on our wood farmhouse table tops. Our top coats penetrate the surface of the wood to provide a hard, durable finish, which also seals the surface and protects against water damage. In most cases, a water glass left overnight on our clear coated tables will not leave a ring. These surfaces provide the benefits of a polyurethane, but are made with environmentally-friendly water-based non-toxic materials. Since these are wood tables, we recommend the use of place mats, coasters and hot pads to maintain the original finish. Surfaces should be cleaned with a damp sponge and dried with a soft, clean cloth. Commercial cleaners should be avoided as they can dull the surface. Waxes and polishes are not recommended or required. For old wood tables, cracking, minor shifting, fractures and bread board movement is considered natural and will vary with temperature and humidity. These types of changes are part of the character of reclaimed wood tables and will not affect the structural integrity of the table.
