Not every home has the space and luxury for a library or reading room, but all you really need is a comfortable chair and a good lamp to create a successful reading nook. Using the braided rug adds warmth and country character as well as helping to carve out the space. The two drawer cabinet shown is a perfect practical piece because it can house books underneath when not in use, and is large enough for ample lamp space. This color palette could easily transition between summer and winter just by switching out the wall decor. Here a serene winter scene hangs above the chair to set the tone for an afternoon with a good book and a warm cup of coffee.

As we hunker down for a long winter here in New England, we are reminded to prepare our beds for cozy sleeping. Here are a few cottage bedroom decorating ideas and inspiration photos for an inviting, warm, and easy to care for seasonal bed!
1) Choose a comfortable type of sheet set, because that is what your body will be predominately exposed to. There are several kinds to choose from, but we prefer 100% cotton because there are no harsh chemicals found in cotton. It is a hypoallergenic material, soft to the touch, and an environmentally friendly natural fiber. It is also an easy to care for material, durable, and not prone to pesky static!
2) Choose a down comforter that is going to work well with the type of "sleeper" you are. This refers to the temperature you keep your bedroom at, as well as how your body naturally regulates temperature throughout the night. For people who are cold sleepers, meaning you tend to be chilly and require a lot of heat to maintain comfort, than it is suggested to choose a heavy weighted down filled comforter. On the other hand, people who tend to be warm sleepers, meaning you tend to heat up or over-heat easily, than it is suggested to use a lighter weight down comforter. Retailers all rate their products individually, and it is best to consult a sales professional when determining which of those retailers’ comforter level is best for you.If you have any allergies to down fill, there are several synthetic comforters to choose from as a hypoallergenic alternative. Some premium comforter retailers offer a synthetic down fill, which feels, warms, and clusters just like real down feathers.
3) Choose a blanket to top your comforter that is going to be weighty enough to hold in the heat. It is imperative to have this layer of blanket to trap in the heat below and keep you nice and toasty. If you are a warm sleeper, and don't need as much added warmth, than choose a blanket that has a more crocheted or basket weave where air can circulate through. This layer is also where you can have fun with color and texture to make your bed's personality shine. Do you want a cool and classic color combination, or do you want a vibrant and bold graphic look?photo: Heirloom Generalphoto: Pinterest4) Building off of your top blanket layer, you want to choose shams and decorative pillows that will play off of your color scheme. There is no need to overdo the decorative pillows, and there is a reason they are called throw pillows! Choose a practical number of extra pillows that you don't mind tossing on and off the bed daily.

This darling cottage kitchen is the perfect size for a weekend getaway. It offers the essentials without any unneeded extras cluttering the small space. The backdrop of all white allows the pastel color palette to pop and draws your eye immediately to the arrangement of polka dots, florals, fabric collages, and painted furniture. The use of lateral and longitudinal boards on the walls, floors, and ceilings emphasize the structure to visually create a larger space. The drop leaf table is a perfect solution for a tight kitchen and saves on space until in use.

Sometimes a room is in need of more than just a coat of paint to bring it’s personality to life. Wallpaper provides a decorative back splash that sets the tone for a space using color, design, and texture. Introducing the right wallpaper to your room isn't always an easy feat, so here are a few helpful tips to guide you in the right direction!
» Decide How Much Should be Covered -
"Entire Room" To maximize the intensity of a selected pattern use it on all the walls in a room. Depending on the print it can actually make the room feel larger by unifying the space with one print.
photo: IndulgyThis large bloom print creates visual interest and keeps the dining room calm with a neutral unifying palette.
"Focal Point" If you want the selected print to act as an accent, use it to draw attention to an interesting architectural detail. For example, apply it above wainscoting, on the fireplace wall, or on bump out walls.
photo: House to HomeBold avocado wainscoting is balanced beautifully with the vivid toile print in this bathroom. Perfectly suited crisp white fixtures complete the look.
"Top to Bottom" This application is suggested with highly textured wallpapers in more of a neutral color. You want the wallpaper selection to enhance, not overtake, your space.
photo: House BeautifulThe large floral wallpaper in rosy hues is a darling choice for this tucked away bedroom. Using a soft color palette and applying the wallpaper on both the walls and eaves creates a unified space.
» Choosing the Right Color and Design for Your Space -
The function of the room suggests the tone of the wallpaper, so keep it subtle in quiet areas like the bedrooms, but try to take a chance in gathering spaces like the living room and dining room. Just like paint colors, your wallpaper selection will help to create the mood of the room. Using lively prints in active areas of your home can also help to increase energy!
photo: Southern LivingThis is a perfect example of going bold in color and giving the walls texture with a grass cloth weave.
Look at the existing furniture and textiles in the room that you want to work around. Choose a color that will complement the color scheme versus duplicating an already predominant color. You want the wallpaper to set the stage for your furniture and produce a balance within the space. That could mean the wallpaper acts more like a focal point when paired with neutral furnishings, or act as a neutral backsplash with more lively furnishings.
photo: Apartment TherapyFraming the cheery yellow wallpaper produces a vibrant accent, as well as making a great backdrop for the white tight back sofa.
Consider how much light the space gets in order to choose the right hue. Avoid darker colors in smaller rooms; use them in larger spaces with a lot of windows instead.
photo: HGTVThis sprawling map wallpaper wraps around the room and works beautifully with the sunny windows and simple decor.
» Function As Well As Fashion -
For bathrooms and kitchens, seek wallpapers that are water resistant as these spaces tend to trap moisture; you don’t want the wallpaper to peel.
For entryways, vinyl wallpaper is a great choice because they tend to be durable, stain-resistant, and easy to clean.
Fabric, Flock and Grass Cloth type wallpapers tend to be difficult to clean so use these in spaces that do not produce a lot of moisture or high traffic.

Looking back on the year 2012, a few key cottage decorating trends come to mind. Let's take a trip down memory lane of all the exciting products and color schemes that made a memorable year in cottage decor.
Industrial Lighting and Accents made of materials like brass, aluminum, copper, and antique nickel add a touch of contemporary class. Using these materials in lighting fixtures creates a soft glow that warms any space. Coral and Turquoise made a splash in coastal homes this year because of the fun loving and vibrant effect it has on any room. Pinky coral hues are reminiscent of the sunset, while turquoise transports you to a Caribbean sea. It is easy to feel the tropical wind in your hair surrounded by these beautiful colors.Gray and White Washed Furniture bring in an old world charm that will never go out of style. Choose one or two pieces with a washed painted finish to add character and introduce a rustic element. Driftwood Accessories and twig furniture are a fantastic way to bring in a weathered look to your cottage home. It is a sculptural and more abstract way of bringing in coastal elements, by playing with form and texture. Using raw and organic materials is only gaining in popularity and recognition as a must have for any home.Graphic Prints, like the chevron and diamond, look great in many applications. Whether in pillows, blankets, or rugs, it adds a punch of visual interest with a modern look.Grey and Yellow are a match made in heaven, because of their balancing properties. Grey tends to be a sleek and modern color used to create a cool tone to a space, whereas yellow tends to be a lively and energetic color. By pairing them, you can create a fun loving and contemporary look.
