Decorating, redoing (or creating) a cottage fireplace mantel in your living room can be an inexpensive way to get some new-to-you coziness in place fast. As it turns out, you don't even need a fireplace, thanks to the popular "floating mantel".   Decorate Your Mantel Swapping out the seasons, amping up the glitz for some holidays: this is the fun part. Each one of us has our favorite rendition of the perfect fireplace mantel, whether it be a country rustic mantel overflowing with gourds, Indian corn, rusty farm implements and beeswax candles, a coastal-inspired mantel showing off delicate starfish, glass buoys, driftwood and twinkle lights, or a lodge look mantel piled high with pinecones, antique lanterns and elk statuettes. The little touches centered around your theme - coastal, cottage, country farmhouse or lodge - are fun to come by and give the decor our own personal stamp. Remember to keep proportion and color in mind for when you step back to observe your new favorite focal point. But sometimes a mantel need a larger item than knick-knacks to set it off - this is where we can help.   Accessorize Your Mantel  From artwork to mirrors, we have the larger companion pieces your cottage style mantel needs. From the upper left photo going clockwise, we will show you examples of like-minded accessories we offer at Cottage Home Furniture. Sea captain's mustard painted mantel: How we love the old time feel of this dining room and the saffron hue of the mantel. This nautical folk art piece suits this cottage dining room, but if you don't have the original, we have something to fit the bill. Our collection of vintage vinyl floor cloths include some seagoing scenes, and although they are primarily meant for the floor, we don't see any reason why you couldn't frame one (available in 23" x 30" and 43" x 56"). Go with what you love. This one we call Pleasant Point:

Ocean theme mantel with artwork: Pretty and pale, this ensemble proves that not all pictures need to be hung to be taken seriously. The large model sailboat needs balance and finds it in this sea blue painting, propped up nearly on a level. We have a large assortment of custom-made canvas giclee wall decor to hang over your prized mantel, from abstract sea horizons to pastoral landscapes. The giclee that rings true to the one in this sea-inspired living room is called Sea Breeze:

Rustic farmhouse country barnwood beam mantel: Throw another log on the fire and stay a while! This fireplace is too pretty serving as a cordwood container to change a thing. Lanterns, pottery planters and botanical touches encourage the feeling of elegant rusticity, and the large, bold clock face ensnares your interest. We offer a variety of cottage wall clocks to pair with your mantelpiece, including the Hampden 1864 Wall Clock: Inspiration Board: Cottage Fireplace Mantel Makeover   Ocean theme mantel with mirror: Adding depth and an ocean hue of soft blue to this coastal living room, the mirror is key to setting off the mantel with its adorable sea birds and natural sea grasses (and another sailboat). We offer several mirrors - some are built by the craftsmen who make our farmhouse tables and they come in several dozen different paint and stain colors. Our Stony Brook Mirror is available in several beachy colors and echoes the lines of the white painted fireplace with its interesting jutting edges:

DIY Mantels Scoring an antique mantel or weathered barnwood at an estate sale always gets the blood pumping. The same goes for inheriting a country estate with fifteen fireplaces, all with mantels elegantly faded to a Byronesque splendor. But if you have no flea market finds - along with a plain mantel, no mantel or even no fireplace - you can still create "the look" with a little elbow grease - and power tools. Have a mantel that you're kind of on the outs with? Here is a DIY video on how to decoratively augment an existing mantel. Don't have a fireplace? You don't even need one. Here is a DIY video on how to add mount a rustic barnboard beam on a wall that needs a fashionable focal point to create a "floating mantel". Inspired yet? Already our desire to hold on to recent beachy, breezy days and our instinct to start making a cozy nest at home begin their annual tug-of-war. But for the moment, let’s enjoy the serenity of this open, airy beach cottage living room with all the trappings of the summer by the seashore.   The innate coastal feel of this living room comes from lots of natural light bouncing off white walls as well as carefully chosen neutral hues. The barely-there bleached natural fiber rug creates an illusion of increased floor space and allows your beach cottage furniture to stand out. Striped seersucker armchairs and cottage painted furniture, starfish pillows and washed chambray slipcovers – all these choices and more look fantastic against a neutral backdrop.

Yes, we love the neutrals – they are a big part of the Cottage Home philosophy. But we also can’t do without the pops of color that can individualize a room and show your cottage style. Handblown aqua bottles and glassware, a navy throw pillow and a russet striped throw some hints of color into the beachy mix. But the fabulous bright tropical shade of coral on the shutter-style cottage painted coffee table steals the show.   The Distinctive Cottage

I don't know about you, but there has been a lot of reading going on in the last few months at my house. Sometimes I reach for already-read novels, sometimes I exhaust all new titles in the genre of the moment (Victorian ghost stories, anyone?), and sometimes I reading about people and places I've never heard of just to feel like I'm becoming more informed. Looking for something new to read? Featured here are three entertaining books that I have read, two recently and one not, each one paired with a cottage style chair reflecting the book's personality. Because no matter what the content, a good book deserves a great chair.   Comfort is Key If your book is compelling enough, sometimes you will realize that you have been reading until the sunlight has faded, oblivious to the discomfort of old metal lawn furniture. But there's no need for that - especially when we have a large selection of attractive and comfy seating. Our cottage seating ranges from rockers and wooden chairs and stools to upholstered and slipcovered pieces and benches. Whether you read indoors our outdoors, or a little of both, we have suitable seating options upon which you should read your novella or biography.   Inspire Your Setting The first selection above (1) is our Outer Banks Wicker Heirloom Chair, from our Cottage Wicker Collection. Its generous, fanned-out silhouette seems a perfect chair choice for reading a biography about Beryl Markham. I can picture Beryl in the 1920s and 1930s lounging in this rustic wicker chair, taking a break from hard work and sharing a drink on the veranda of her favorite Kenyan bar, the Muthaiga Club. Never heard of her? Besides being the first person (man or woman) to successfully fly an airplane solo east to west across the Atlantic Ocean in 1936, statuesque Beryl was an author and award-winning professional horse trainer. Raised by her father in the Kenyan bush alongside the native people, she had an adventurous life that included hunting and scouting game, even a British Royal Prince. For the rest of her radically unconventional life she was paid hush money by the Crown... and she looked fabulous into her 80s to boot. The central selection (2) is from our Summer House Upholstered Collection - the Pepperrell Cove Upholstered Bench. Customization is a breeze with hundreds of fabrics to choose from. I chose this long and lean piece for the famous couturiere - Coco Chanel. I can see her perch lightly on this sofa-length bench for just un moment - perhaps to sip a pernod - pleased with the simple lines and contrasting pattern. Many of us know Chanel -  her style, her aesthetic. But the secrets she harbored numbered more than her weight and perfume formula. Liaisons of all kinds, from passionate to practical, filled this busy grand dame's life. Not to mention that she came from nothing. She sprung herself from an orphanage straight into Belle Epoque Paris, found some heavy-hitting friends and got to work creating tirelessly. Her new biography reveals arrangements she held with the Nazi occupiers of war-torn France. In sympathy or for survival? We may never know. The last cottage chair selection (3) is from our uniquely styled Rustic Hickory Twig Furniture collection. Backwoods know-how and steambent hickory and oak are what makes it look so cool. I can picture settling down in this rocking chair to listen to the sounds from a steamy bayou and hear a good old murder tale. OK - so I read this book a long time ago now. Or did I just see the movie? No - I would never do such a thing. So besides knowing that this book contains a murder, and some antiques, as well as voodoo and a creepy statue on the cover, I don't remember the details. But I remember the setting, the old, genteel squares of Savannah as well as the eerie kudzu-covered side of Savannah. And of course certain characters like Lady Chablis and the voodoo priestess Minerva definitely made an impression. This country style rocker is the best place to comfortably hear a story filled with fear, revenge and ghosts - the gentle rocking of your own flesh and blood will stave off the spirits!   Choose Your Colors Shown in Acorn, the Outer Banks Wicker Heirloom Chair is available in 20 available colors (including Natural). Buttercup is shown (top right) because it shows off Beryl's hair For the Pepperrell Cove Upholstered Bench, the leg selection shown is Dune. However, there are eighteen total leg colors as well, and any Benjamin Moore paint color can be added to your bench to further make it your own. Our Bentwood Rocker looks jaunty in Old Red, but there are a baker's dozen of other colors to choose from, including pretty Bishop Blue (shown at bottom left).   Book credits: 1) Straight on Till Morning: The Biography of Beryl Markham by Mary S. A porch is not just a way to state your style to any passers-by, but a place to hover between the safety of home and the ever-calling romance with the outdoors and neighborly life. The porch is not just a portal to all that we call home, but also to everything we as humans seek out. So go ahead and decorate your outside “room” just like you would any indoor living space. It’s good for you! First, is the porch completely enclosed, covered, or is it more susceptible to the elements? We offer three collections of wicker for any setting:
  • Cottage Wicker – designed for indoors and for a covered screened porches
  • Porch Wicker – designed for any type of covered porch with limited exposure
  • Outdoor Wicker – can be used anywhere, including open patios
Now decide how you will primarily use the porch – think beyond just relaxing and grilling. This will help you prioritize your space.
  • Do you want to incorporate a dining area?
  • Would you rather have a cozy conversation nook?
  • Do you need a staging area for gardening?
The pictured porch is pretty impervious to weather, so the pieces in it hail from our Cottage Wicker Furniture Collection. Featured are some key pieces for relaxing as well as entertaining, such as the Cottage Wicker Hexagonal Table and the St. Augustine Wicker Rocker. Several wicker colors are available. P.S. The little cutie peeking in at the lower right-hand corner of the photo is the Cape Hatteras Fish/Whale Bed.   Our Porch Wicker Furniture Collection is a versatile option for indoors, screened-in areas and covered porches – all pieces are made of durable rattan. If you’ve always wanted a small dining area on your porch, the space saving Bistro Wicker Dining Table is a great idea.

Today’s selection of outdoor furniture, outdoor fabrics and rugs allow you to create the porch of your dreams!  Here is an example of one of our enviable Outdoor Wicker Furniture Collection pieces, the Bermuda Wicker Swivel Glider (many coordinating pieces):

Whatever is on your porch agenda, remember to plan for privacy so you can truly relax and enjoy the space.  Consider the seasons – shading is essential in the rainy spring and hot summer, while an adjacent fire pit or outdoor heaters allows you to enjoy your outdoor space long into the autumn and early winter.

Aside from the creative choices involved, such as picking paint or stain colors, there are some basic practical considerations for everyday functionality.

1. What size farmhouse table do I need?

The ideal dining table size for you depends upon the number of people you seat most days, as well as the size of your room or dining area. This chart shows recommended table sizes based upon number of people for both round tables and rectangular tables with a width of 36”- 42”.
# of people Seats comfortably Workable size
4 4' rect / 48" round  42" round
6 6' rect / 60" round 5' rect / 54" round
8 8' rect / 72" round 7' rect / 66" round
10 10' rect 9' rect
Extensions   Extensions? If you entertain often, company board extensions are available for most of our farmhouse tables. They slide into the ends of the table to maintain the look of the long planks used in traditional farmhouse tables and to avoid a split in the center. A pair of extensions increases the size of your dining table by 3 feet - space for four more guests. Adequate clearance? Allow a clearance of 36”around your table for walking and pulling out chairs (the minimum without feeling too tight is 27”). Make sure that your dining chairs or benches will fit comfortably around your new table, allowing 2-6” between chairs. If you have a banquette, also consider either a trestle or pedestal base for your table to avoid interference with a table leg. For additional information, please see our Dining Table Seating Guide.

2. What kind of wood should I choose for the top of my farmhouse table?

Selecting a type of wood for your farmhouse table involves striking a balance between appearance, durability and cost. Appearance For a farmhouse table with individual character, reclaimed wood such as pine and oak is a popular choice. Other woods, such as maple or new pine, will give your table a classic farmhouse look without rustic details like distressing. Wood with beautiful graining, such as oak, should be shown off with a stained or waxed finish. If you prefer your table painted, choose a wood with fewer knots (like poplar or maple) for no show-through. Durability If you are concerned with keeping the everyday wear of your table to a minimum, consider the hardness of the wood you choose.  Softer woods, such as new pine or poplar, can be more susceptible to dings. Here is a rough guide to the hardness of different woods by density:

New Pine                      Poplar     Old Pine                                Maple                                                              Oak

Soft ---------------------------------------------- Medium ------------------------------------------ Hard

 350  400  450  500  550  600  650  700  750  800  850  900  950 1000 1050 1100 1150 1200 1250 1300

Cost For farmhouse tables, the harder the wood, the higher the cost. Pine and poplar are the least expensive woods while oak costs considerably more. Reclaimed (old) wood tables, which are more durable than those made from new pine, are also less expensive than hardwood tables. Based upon our 17 years of experience designing custom farmhouse tables, the most popular wood choices remain pine, old (reclaimed) pine and maple.

3. What is the most durable finish for the top of my farmhouse table?

A clear top coat over either a stained or painted finish is the most durable surface for a farmhouse table top. Remember that any major surface damage to this finish may require professional repair – or just leave the marks to increase the character of the table top. Whatever finish you choose for your farmhouse table, we recommend using place mats, coasters and hot pads to keep it free of water rings or burn marks.

4. How do I care for my farmhouse table?

The top of your farmhouse table is easy to maintain – clean with a damp sponge and dry with a clean, soft cloth. DO NOT USE CLEANERS OR SOLVENTS (Pledge, 409, nail polish removers, etc). For small dings or scratches on painted surfaces, touch up paint (not stain) is available from us. A stain from your local hardware store in a similar color to your table finish can fix minor dings or scratches on stained tables, but major repairs or refinishing should be left to a professional. Only apply wax touch-ups (we can provide brand information) if you have a table with a waxed finish and want to freshen the look periodically. Do not sand before applying wax, then let dry and then buff off with clean, dry, soft cloth.

A farmhouse kitchen is the ultimate area to relax and eat meals in the home. It’s an open-concept space in which families can get together and celebrate. But what elements are found in farmhouse kitchens? And how can you create the ideal farmhouse kitchen in your home? In this latest post, we’re highlighting five examples of features you’ll find in the classic farmhouse kitchen.

What to Consider When Shopping for Farmhouse Kitchen Products

Before reviewing the latest items matching the farmhouse kitchen aesthetic, you must keep some considerations in mind. Below are several key questions to help you when making the decision.

Does the Product Match the Colors of My Kitchen?

When adding new products to your kitchen, take the time to review the exact colors of each item, and ensure the colors match the distinct style of your kitchen. You can speak with the sales team directly to learn more about the color-matching process. This can be important to unifying the current look of the kitchen and achieving your design goals.

Can the Item Be Easily Integrated?

When most people are shopping for new feature items in their kitchen, they aren’t considering the process of integrating the new item. A new sink might be the ideal choice for improving the kitchen’s design. But how much work is involved in getting the sink into the kitchen and installing it?

Will the New Feature Offer Lasting Value?

While farmhouse kitchen styles tend to remain similar over many years, you may find that some new additions are simply a recent trend. Take the time to speak with the experts and find out about the lasting value a new addition can bring to life in your farmhouse.

Here are five distinct farmhouse kitchen design elements you might want to add to your home.

1. Exposed Shelving and Cabinetry

The typical farmhouse kitchen will feature exposed shelving cabinetry, which makes the room feel more open and welcoming. Make sure that exposed shelving is near to natural light sources so that you can expand upon the feeling of openness. Exposed shelving and cabinetry take up less visual space, so they make the room seem larger and the ceilings appear higher and the walls further apart.

2. The Farmhouse Sink

The farmhouse sink harkens back to a time when the kitchen was the hub of all activity within the home. They offer the perfect combination of aesthetics and functionality. The traditional farmhouse sink is noted for its depth and width, as well as its apron, which juts out slightly from the countertop. In the farmhouse kitchen layout, the sink typically contrasts in color from the rest of the countertop.

3. Free-Standing Cabinets

As well as being exposed to the light, farmhouse kitchen cabinets are typically freestanding. That's because space was limited back when the farmhouses were traditionally built, and so homeowners added freestanding features for additional storage. A freestanding cabinet is usually placed against a wall and out of the way to enhance traffic flow in the kitchen.

4. Hardwood Flooring

One of the standout features in many farmhouse kitchens is hardwood flooring. It will look impeccable whether you go for a distressed style or a more natural look. One of the key benefits of using hardwood flooring is that it’s easy to clean. And even wear and tear on the floor will add to the vintage appeal of the space. Many homeowners are now substituting natural wood with ceramic or vinyl for the same aesthetic without the associated maintenance or cost.

5. Traditional Lighting

Traditional farmhouse lighting can become the centerpiece of the room. Simple lighting additions such as Edison bulbs can help that classic style resonate. These features often look better when hanging down into the room. Using a drop-down fixture above your farm table will provide the perfect lighting conditions to prep and eat meals.

Yay or Nay?" We had a staggering amount of responses, and found that the results were neck-in-neck. 46% of the responders said no way would they ever have a TV in the bedroom, whereas 54% said they absolutely love having a TV in the bedroom! Even though there is no right or wrong answer, we wanted to share some of the pros and cons people posted from both sides of this heated debate.

Pros

  • In the colder months, there is nothing better than curling up in your nice warm bed to catch up on some of your favorite shows.
  • It is more comfortable to lie down and/or stretch out in bed versus on the sofa.
  • Another viewing area is helpful to avoid disagreements at home.
  • It is nice to have background noise when you fall asleep.
  • A great way to wake up in the morning is with coffee, in bed, while watching the morning news.

Cons

  • The noise and/or light level interrupts deep and restful sleep.
  • The bedroom is supposed to be a peaceful place, and the TV disrupts that.
  • There are TV's in the rest of the home, so it doesn't need to be in the bedroom too.
  • It is aesthetically displeasing.
If you find yourself in a disagreement with your partner about whether or not you should have a TV in the bedroom, here are a few ways to compromise.

Compromising

  • Have a TV in the bedroom, but put it in a cabinet that has closed doors. That offers an "out of sight and out of mind" mentality when not in use.
  • Use the sleep timer to make sure that the television shuts off, even after you have fallen asleep. That way it does not continue to interrupt deep and restful sleep for you or your partner.
  • Bring the laptop into bed instead of having a TV set up all of the time. It allows the TV viewer to put on headphones to listen in, while the other partner is none the wiser.
From an cottage decorating point of view, there are a lot of unobtrusive ways to incorporate a TV into your design scheme that don't make it a focal point.  Here are some beautiful inspiration photos to help you find the right solution for your bedroom:

How do you weigh in about having a TV in the bedroom?  Any new thoughts that might sway a yay or a nay-sayer to the other side?

Here is a quick reference photo that labels the sections of a sofa to help visualize where fabrics can be positioned.  The same terms can be used to describe accent chairs as well.

How To Make Collage Furniture | Collaging A Cottage Sofa

Determining the size of the piece you want to collage, and how many fabrics to use, are the two hardest questions to answer.  Keep in mind that the bigger the piece and the more fabrics you use, the more intense the overall look.  If you want a sofa with an eclectic look, but want to control the intensity, choose a limited number of fabrics that are softer on the eyes.

If you want an eclectic look with a lot of personality, go big and go bold!  Use a variety of fabrics in bold tones to design a look that shows off your creative nature.  The warm tones of the reds, greens, oranges and blues in the sofa below create an electrifying result.  It's not for the faint of heart, as it truly makes a brave statement.

Using the collage application on an accent chair tends to be a more popular choice, because the scale allows for just a hint of eclecticism without dominating the space like a full size sofa would.  The personality of the piece is dictated by the shape of the chair and the fabric selections you use.  Since there is not as much surface space on a chair versus a sofa, the number of fabrics used is typically smaller, or the size of the fabric cuts are smaller.  Either way, you still end up with a unique and interesting addition to your home.  Here are a few decorating ideas of accent chairs that have a small number of complementing fabrics with a lot of pizzazz.

Looking for a more unconventional accent chair to really make a statement?  Take a look at these chairs with wild patterns and colorful prints that are sure to make a splash!

The beauty of incorporating a collaged piece in your home is the opportunity to think outside of the box.  You can use more of the fabrics that you love; you don't have to choose between that adorable blue ticking fabric, or the bountiful floral fabric you just can't resist.  Use them all to create a piece of furniture that will showcase your style and personality!
